At Home
You will need to contact a Doctor (or the Doctor on duty) who will certify that death has taken place and, if he or she is able, issue a death certificate. It is most likely that this certificate will need to be collected from the Doctors Surgery. If the Doctor has referred the death to the Coroner then please read paragraph titles 'The Coroner'. You may wish for the deceased to be transferred to our Chapel of Rest and our staff receive training in order to handle this difficult event with care and sensitivity. Do not feel that this has to take place immediately; some families wish to wait until other family members have arrived in
order to say their goodbyes at home. Remember, you are always welcome to visit our Chapels of Rest, but please let us know when you wish to attend. It is advisable to contact your Funeral Director without delay. Preliminary and provisional arrangements may be made, if so required, in advance of the registration of the death. To contact us please telephone us on the number above, we are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
At a Nursing or Residential Home
The above procedure is likely to have been carried out, with your permission, by the Matron or Warden who will advise you of where to collect the Certificate
Registration
It is legally necessary for a near relative to attend the Registrar's office within the area where the death occurred.
Nowadays most registrars require an appointment to be made, the telephone numbers for deaths occurring in Nuneaton,
Bedworth, Atherstone, Coventry and Hinckley will be found at the bottom of this page.
The Registrar will require the Medical certificate of Death and the deceased's Medical Card (if available) together with the
following information.

  • Full name of the deceased
  • The deceased's date and place of death
  • The deceased's home address
  • The deceased's date and place of birth
  • The date of birth of a surviving spouse
  • The deceased's maiden name, if applicable
  • The deceased's former occupation, where relevant
  • If married, date of birth of surviving husband or wife
  • Name and address of informant
  • Informant's qualification for registering
The Registrar will issue a Green Certificate, which must be handed to us as soon as possible. This is a legal certificate, which enables the burial or cremation to take place. The Registrar will also issue certified copies of the entry of Death for the
administration of the estate upon payment of the appropriate fee. We will be happy to provide a complementary car to take you to the registrar if required.
Registration by Declaration.
It is now possible to register the death at a distance if a visit to the local registrar is
impossible. However this can result in an additional delay before the funeral takes place. D B Devall can advise you on this procedure.
The Coroner
There are a number of reasons why a death may have to be referred to the Coroner and under such circumstances
different procedural requirements and registration procedure will be necessary. In part this will depend on whether there is to be a burial or cremation or if the Coroner has requested an inquest. However, these should not give you any cause for alarm. Please contact us and we will advise you of these differences.
Removing the Deceased
Our staff are trained to remove the deceased sensitively and efficiently. Care is taken to follow your requirements
regarding any jewellery. Strict instructions ensure that at all times the deceased is properly identified.
